This is the kind of rugged Greek country that Ahna's new clan will be migrating into in the second book in the Chronicles of Eden series. Their emphasis on maintaining and increasing their numbers of animals and people as marks of their wealth and power will not stand them in good stead as they are forced into regions with less and less resources. The pressures of the changing topography and the resulting lack of large communities of the Old Europeans to provide them with warehouses full of grain and other supplies will be added to the pressure of the other nomadic tribes around them, who are meeting with the same conditions. For the first time since they left the steppes, they are now in conflict not only with the Others, but with their own people. In this setting Ahna raises a family and becomes a source of healing for both the people and the animals of her tribe, learning to deal with the realities of her culture such as jealous second wives and mentally ill children along the way. Her early mentors have warned her of just the kind of problem her people now face; she works against great odds to build a political base of thought that will allow them to escape permanent dissolution. Meanwhile, her brother Redwolf is trying to solve different problems with the same cause among the Old Europeans, and their arch-enemy Srogaraad is rebuilding his life and power among refugees from the raids of the nomads. All these stories will come together in one final confrontation during which every participant will change and be changed. The Takers: Wolves will be published in November 2011. |
